10/30/2022 0 Comments Kameo elements of power 2![]() It's a system that doesn't sound dissimilar to the way combat works in Bioware's Jade Empire, although we've yet to see how well it works in practice. Each of those forms looks radically different and has different abilities as well as a different combat style - we particularly liked the pugilistic plant, which can drop down into the ground leaving only the flower on top of its head visible, and move around in that form, allowing Kameo to, for example, get past doors and gates with gaps underneath them.Īs you progress through the game, you'll also learn to chain attacks from different forms together into combos, so you might knock an enemy into the air with an uppercut from one form and then swiftly change form and fling icicles at it with a magical attack with another. The idea behind Kameo is a slightly odd fantasy concept you play as the eponymous fairy, capable of transforming into one of ten different creature forms to accomplish your (as yet unrevealed) goals. J Allard has told us to be patient with Rare - but with Xbox 360 on the horizon, it's surely now time to deliver the goods? Perfect Dark Zero didn't exactly look hot in the early shots released last week - in fact, it was struggling to even look lukewarm - but I still hold out a hefty degree of fanboyish hope that it'll live up to our expectations, which is what the few people who saw it behind closed doors at E3 claim it will do.Īnd then, somewhat overshadowed by Joanna Dark's bombastic exploits, there's Kameo: Elements of Power, a game that's been redesigned so many times we've lost count, but which is now finally on the home straight and destined for launch early in the lifespan of the Xbox 360. In what must be a bit of an embarrassment for Microsoft, if you wanted to play a really good Rare game in the last few years, the best place to do it was on Game Boy Advance. Since Microsoft signed a gobsmackingly large cheque to add the studio to its internal development repertoire back in 2002, it hasn't exactly justified its price tag - producing only the fun but not exactly world-igniting Grabbed by the Ghoulies, and the forthcoming, foul-mouthed, Conker: Live & Reloaded. The camera problems however will irritate you throughout. Those onetime Britsoft gods at Rare have had a bit of a rough ride from the press in the last few years, and with some justification. Once you’ve mastered the Cyclone effect, by pulling both your left and right triggers simultaneously, you’ll be shooting up ramps with a fair degree of accuracy. Jumping a chasm can be a chore even when your doing it the right way, the degree of accuracy needed to land in the correct spot is plain annoying. During the first level you may enter into the controller-throwing mind set of a moody teenager, as you struggle to adapt to the disheartening camera angles and the armadillo’s inclination for speeding off in the wrong direction. The frustration of mastering the techniques and movements of a few of the characters is part and parcel of Kameo. The game does flirt with this idea, for example, when morphing into the warrior Deep Blue you can spit oil over enemies, switch to Ash, the fire breathing dragon, and set the oil on fire! Making these characters work together would have made a much more solid and rewarding gaming experience. The interaction of these characters as a team could also have been looked at more thoroughly you can play a large chunk of the combat side of the game using a couple of the key creatures. A few carefully placed challenging puzzles would have created an empathy with these creatures, but as it happens you’ll plough through most of the game using sheer strength alone. Despite the abundance of characters, the excitement in discovering a new warrior, and the moves these characters possess, it’s a shame they aren’t used to better effect. ![]() There is little in the way of puzzle solving in Kameo, deciding which character to use for which task is the closest the game gets, you’ll unlock 10 of these characters, all of which can be accessed easily on screen. Defeat the trolls and you’ll open up a new area, accessible by using Major Ruin’s ‘Cyclone’. You’ll need to use the correct character in order to progress, for example, you’ll need to morph into Pummel Weed in order to use the ‘Creeper’ technique, which allows you to overturn objects that trolls may be hiding under. ![]() Each level ends with the familiar, but enjoyable task of defeating the end of level boss. Enter an area, defeat the creature, which unlocks a pathway, enter the next area, and repeat. This is pretty much the pattern of the entire game. ![]()
